최근 논란의 대상인 손소독제들이 대거 리콜 명령을 받았다.
연방식품의약국, FDA는 손소독제 중에서 75개 제품들이 ‘메탄올’ 성분을 함유한 것으로 드러나 리콜 명령을 내렸다고 밝혔다. FDA는 인체에 해로운 ‘메탄올’ 성분이 들어있는 손소독제들이 사용되고 있다고 지적하고 75개 제품들에 대해 리콜 조치를 단행했다.
FDA는 ‘메탄올’ 성분이 들어간 손소독제 경우 절대로 사용하지 않을 것을 권고했다. ‘메탄올’은 영어로 ‘Methanol’인데 다른 명칭인 ‘Wood Alcohol’로도 불린다. FDA는 최근 ‘코로나 19’ 확산으로 바이러스 감염을 우려하는 목소리가 커지고 있고 이 때문에 손소독제 수요가 크게 높아지면서 아무 제품들이나 사용하는 사람들이 늘고 있다고 지적했다.
반드시, 사람들은 ‘메탄올’ 성분이 없다고 신뢰할 수 있는 제품만을 구입해 사용해야 하는데 아무 제품이나 쓰다 보면 ‘메탄올’이 들어있을 수 있다는 것이다. FDA는 ‘메탄올’ 성분이 있는 손소독제를 사용해온 사람들의 경우에 즉각 병원에서 해독 치료를 받아야 한다고 강조했다. ‘메탄올’ 성분이 있는 손소독제를 사용하면 영양소 결핍 현상이 일어날 수 있고, 독성 때문에 시신경에 질병이 생길 수도 있는데 최악의 경우에는 시력을 완전히 상실할 수도 있다.
사람들이 ‘메탄올’ 성분 손소독제를 사용해서 독성에 중독이 되면 나타나는 증상들로는 메스꺼움과 구토, 두통, 시야 흐려짐, 영구 시력상실, 발작, 혼수상태, 신경 파괴 등이 대표적이다. FDA는 ‘메탄올’ 성분 소소독제 사용이 위험한 것이 손으로 눈을 만져야 눈에 영향을 미치는 것이 아니라면 손에 바르고 다른 신체 부위를 전혀 만지지 않아도 손에서 몸 안으로 흡수될 수 있기 때문에 신체 내에서 시 신경까지 이동해서 눈까지도 멀게 할 수 있다는 설명이다.
FDA는 최악의 경우 사망까지 이를 수 있어 ‘메탄올’ 성분 손소독제 사용을 즉각적으로 중단해야 한다고 경고했다. FDA는 리콜 명령을 내린 ‘메탄올’ 성분이 들어있는 75개에 달하는 손소독제 ‘List’를 공개했는데 다음과 같다.
