내년 2014년 10월부터는 기존의 ICD-9 대신 ICD-10을 적용해야만 보험 청구를 받을 수 있다. 당초 올 10월부터 시행하기로 했던 이 규정은 홍보 미흡 등의 이유로 1년 연기 됐다.
그러나 본지는 일부 독자들로부터 “워컴이나 대형 병원 등과 관련된 보험사들은 벌써부터 ICD-10을 사용하지 않아서 보험 청구가 거부됐다”는 몇 몇 제보를 받았다.
이에 기존의 ICD-9과 ICD-10이 어떻게 다르고 무엇이 바뀌는 지에 대해 연재하기로 한다. <편집자주>

Placeholder Character 자리맞춤 글자 The ICD-10 uses a placeholder character “X.” The “X” is used as a placeholder for certain codes to allow for future expansion. Where a placeholder exists, the X must be used in order for the code to be considered a valid code. ICD-10에서는 “X”를 자리맞춤 글자로 사용. “X”는 자리맞춤 글자로 추후 확장을 가능케 함.

7th Characters 7번째 문자 Certain ICD-10 categories have applicable 7th characters. The applicable 7th character is required for all codes within the category, or as the notes in the Tabular List instruct. The 7th character must always be the 7th character in the data field. If a code that requires a 7th character is not 6 characters, a placeholder “”X”” must be used to fill in the empty characters.
일부 ICD-10 카테고리에서 7번째 문자를 사용할 수 있으며 사용할 수 있는 예는 사용표에 지시돼 있다. 7번째 문자는 항상 코드내에서 7번째에 위치해야 한다. 만일 7번째 문자를 사용해야 하는 상황에서 코드의 문자가 모두 6개가 안될 경우, 자리맞춤 “X”를 사용해야 한다.
